Systematic review of the use of retrievable inferior vena cava filters.

Summary: Imagine a small, basket-like device placed in your body’s main vein to catch dangerous blood clots before they travel to your lungs. These "retrievable" IVC filters are designed to be temporary lifesavers for patients who cannot take blood thinners. A major review of over 6,000 patients confirms they are excellent at stopping clots. However, there is a significant catch: while intended to be temporary, they are only successfully removed about one-third of the time. The majority end up staying in the body permanently, which increases the risk of complications the longer they remain. While effective in emergencies, the "exit strategy" for these devices often fails.
