Systemic therapy in the management of metastatic or locally recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands: a systematic review.

Summary: Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) is a rare cancer found in salivary glands. Its behavior is unpredictable; for some, it grows very slowly, while for others, it spreads rapidly. When the cancer returns or spreads (metastasizes) and cannot be removed by surgery or radiation, doctors turn to chemotherapy. However, because ACC is so rare, there have been very few large-scale studies to determine the best treatment. This review analyzed 34 small trials involving 441 patients. The conclusion suggests that while chemotherapy can help manage symptoms (palliative care), there is currently no single "gold standard" drug regimen, and treatments are chosen based on individual needs to improve quality of life.
