The association of frailty and mechanical power with hospital mortality in critically ill patients: a retrospective study based on the MIMIC-IV and eICU database.

Summary: When people are very sick in the intensive care unit (ICU) and need a breathing machine, doctors look at two main things to see how well they might do. First is "frailty," which means how weak or vulnerable their body is. Second is "mechanical power," which measures how hard the breathing machine is working to push air into their lungs. This study looked at over 17,000 patients and found that being frail and needing a lot of machine power both increase the chance of not surviving. Even worse, when these two things happen together, the risk goes up even more. Doctors can use this information to better monitor and care for the sickest patients.
