The Bugs Aren't on Vacation: What Pharmacists Need to Know About the Evolving Infectious Disease Landscape
Summary: Infectious diseases do not take vacations. According to a recent pharmacy conference, superbugs are getting smarter and spreading faster. A highly resistant bacteria called NDM-CRE has increased by 460%, making it much harder to treat. At the same time, measles is making a big comeback. In 2025, there were 2,285 cases, mostly in people who were not vaccinated.
Global travel and climate change are helping these illnesses spread, sometimes even jumping from animals to humans. To fight back, health experts are using new rules. For example, the treatment for complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) has been shortened. Patients now only need 5 to 7 days of antibiotics instead of 10 to 14 days. Pharmacists are on the front lines of this battle, helping to catch illnesses early and making sure patients get the right medicine.
