The Complete Project Hail Mary Timeline Explained

Summary: A space mold called Astrophage is eating the sun and freezing the Earth. Middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) figures out how the mold works, but he is too scared to go on the space mission to fix it. His boss kidnaps him and puts him in a medically induced coma because he has the rare genetics to survive the trip. He wakes up 13 years later with amnesia and finds his crewmates dead.

Grace soon meets an alien named Rocky, whose planet is also dying from the mold. Together, they find a new microbe called Taumoeba that eats the mold. However, the microbe mutates and ruins Rocky's ship. Grace sends the cure back to Earth on small probes, but gives up his own trip home to save his alien friend. In the end, Earth is saved, and Grace stays on Rocky's home planet to teach science to young aliens.
