The effect of vacation on reading fluency development.
Summary: Kids get much better at reading during the school year, but what happens over summer break? A study of 98 elementary school students found that long vacations actually hurt their reading skills. Kids in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades read slower after their break. However, younger kids moving from 2nd to 3rd grade didn't lose their skills because they kept practicing their reading. The big takeaway? It is super important to keep kids reading while they are on vacation so they don't fall behind!
