The impact of predialytic oral protein-based supplements on nutritional status and quality of life in hemodialysis patients: a randomized clinical trial.

Summary: For patients undergoing hemodialysis, maintaining proper nutrition is a constant challenge. A new study explored a simple solution: giving patients a protein shake (oral nutritional supplement) one hour before their dialysis session began. After three months, the patients who drank the protein shake showed improved protein levels in their blood (albumin) and reported a better quality of life compared to those who didn't. However, the results came with a trade-off. The protein group experienced slightly higher blood pressure and a reduction in the efficiency of the dialysis treatment itself (how well waste was cleaned from the blood). While pre-dialysis protein boosts nutrition, doctors must carefully monitor blood pressure and treatment adequacy.
