The Landmark Series: Extent of Surgery for Low-Risk Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.

Summary: For patients diagnosed with low-risk thyroid cancer, the medical approach is undergoing a major shift. In the past, doctors often removed the entire thyroid gland and nearby lymph nodes to be safe. However, new research shows that these cancers are highly treatable with excellent survival rates regardless of how aggressive the surgery is. To protect the patient's quality of life and reduce side effects, experts now recommend "less is more": choosing partial removal (lobectomy) or even just active monitoring over time, rather than immediate, extensive surgery.
