The new LACMA is divisive. It’s also ambitious, disorienting — and radically alive
Summary: The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has finally opened its new David Geffen Galleries. The project cost $724 million and took over 20 years to plan. Instead of a normal museum with square rooms, it is one giant, floating concrete building that stretches right over Wilshire Boulevard.
Inside, there is no set path to follow. Visitors just wander and discover art on their own. Some people are upset because the museum tore down older buildings to make this one, and the raw concrete walls look a bit rough. However, many see it as a thrilling success. It is a bold, unique space that proves Los Angeles is still willing to take big risks.
