The prognostic value of preoperative serum liver function-related indicators in colorectal cancer.

Summary: Doctors are always looking for better ways to guess how well patients will do after surgery for colon cancer. In a large study of almost 4,000 patients, researchers found that simple, everyday blood tests for liver health can provide huge clues. Specifically, two liver enzymes called ALP and LDH act as strong warning signs. By combining these blood test results with the patient's age, tumor size, and cancer stage, doctors created a helpful points chart (called a nomogram). This chart does a great job at predicting a patient's chances of survival, which helps doctors make better, more personalized treatment choices for each person.
