Therapeutic Potential of Chitosan Nasal Gel in Addressing Olfactory Dysfunction: A Clinical Trial and Mechanistic Study.

Summary: Losing your sense of smell isn't just an annoyance; it affects your ability to taste food and detect dangers like smoke or gas. Scientists recently tested a nasal gel made from chitosan (a substance found in shellfish shells) to help people who had lost their sense of smell for over six months. The theory is that the gel helps regenerate nerve cells in the nose by lowering calcium levels in the mucus. In a study of over 200 people, those using the gel saw improvements in their ability to identify and distinguish different smells compared to a placebo group. However, while the scores went up, the overall improvement didn't quite reach the level doctors consider "clinically significant" for a full recovery. It’s a promising step, but more research is needed.
