Tiprelestat for treatment of hospitalized COVID-19: results of the double-blind randomized placebo-controlled COMCOVID trial.
Summary: When people get very sick with COVID-19, a chemical in their body can become too active and hurt their lungs. Doctors tested a new medicine called Tiprelestat to see if it could block this chemical and protect the lungs. They gave the medicine to a small group of patients in the hospital.
The good news is that the medicine was very safe and did not cause bad side effects. The patients who took it also spent less time needing extra oxygen. However, because the pandemic was ending, the doctors could only test 17 people instead of the 296 they planned. This is too few to know for sure how well it works, so they need to do bigger tests in the future to prove it helps.
