Trends show ‘subtle’ increase in early-onset cancer burden, significant drop in mortality
Summary: Cancer in adults under 50 is up a tiny bit (3%) globally since 1990. Why? Mostly because we are much better at screening and finding it early. But here is the great news: deaths from these early-onset cancers have actually dropped by 17%. Medical treatments are working, and more people are surviving!
However, there is a catch. While we are beating cancer at higher rates, our modern lifestyle is causing a new problem. Cancer deaths linked to obesity and high body weight have shot up by nearly 93% over the last three decades. So, while doctors are getting much better at treating the disease, taking care of our everyday health, diet, and weight is more important than ever.
