Trump’s Medicaid Work Mandate Debuting in Nebraska to Much Dismay
Summary: Nebraska is the first state to start using a new Medicaid rule signed by President Trump. Starting May 1, people on Medicaid must prove they work, go to school, or volunteer for at least 80 hours a month to keep their free health insurance. People with certain health problems are excused.
Dr. Mehmet Oz said he is glad Nebraska is going first and that they are just fixing early problems. However, doctors and patients are very worried. Many adults on Medicaid already work. Even people who work three jobs, like shifts at Dunkin', fear they might lose their coverage just because of a confusing paperwork mistake. When a similar rule was tried in Arkansas a few years ago, thousands of people lost their health insurance mostly because of tricky forms, not because they refused to work.
