Types of Genetic Trisomy Disorders
Summary: Trisomy happens when a person has three copies of a chromosome instead of the normal two. We usually get 23 chromosomes from our mom and 23 from our dad. Sometimes, cells make a mistake when dividing, leaving an extra copy behind. This causes conditions like Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), which is the most common. Other types, like Edwards or Patau syndrome, are much more severe and often cause miscarriages or very short lives. Some trisomies only affect the sex chromosomes (like XXX or XYY) and have very mild symptoms or none at all.
