Understanding GLP-1 Drugs: Cost, Safety, and Access in Context
Summary: GLP-1 drugs, like Ozempic and Wegovy, are famous for helping people lose weight, but they are not magic wands. Experts say obesity is a long-term disease, much like high blood pressure. If you stop taking these drugs, you will likely gain back about two-thirds of the weight you lost. This happens because the drug treats the condition but does not "cure" it permanently.
While these medicines are generally safe, buying cheaper, copycat versions online can be risky because nobody is sure exactly what is in them. Also, just taking a shot isn't enough. Patients need "wraparound care," which means eating right and exercising to stop muscles from getting weak. Although the drugs are expensive now, prices might drop soon as new pill versions are developed.
