Understanding Your Blood Type With the ABO System and Rh Factor
Summary: Did you know your blood is as unique as you are? There are eight main blood types, figured out by the ABO system (A, B, AB, or O) and the Rh factor (positive or negative). Your blood type is super important if you ever need a transfusion. If you get the wrong type, your body's immune system might attack the new blood! Type O-negative is the "universal donor," meaning it can be given to almost anyone. Type AB-positive is the "universal recipient," meaning those people can receive almost any blood type.
Knowing your blood type is also a big deal if you are pregnant. If a mother is Rh-negative but her baby is Rh-positive, the mother's body might treat the baby's blood like an invader. Doctors can easily fix this by giving the mother a special shot to protect the baby. There is even a super rare blood type called "golden blood" that has no Rh antigens at all!
