Unethical Influence
Summary: Did you know that the American Medical Association (AMA) gets way more money from pharmaceutical companies than from doctors' membership dues? In 2022, only $34 million of their revenue came from dues, while a massive $293 million came from products and royalties bought mostly by Big Pharma.
Individual doctors are getting paid, too. Over $12 billion was paid to medical providers between 2013 and 2022, mostly tied to selling medical products. Big Pharma also spends billions to influence medical journals. Former editors of top journals, like The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet, warn that drug companies often control the research. They say these companies hide negative results and push positive ones, making it hard to trust "the science." Recently, chiropractic leaders met with the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) group in Washington, D.C., to talk about these issues and push for better, more honest health policies.
