Universal screening for hyperglycemia in early pregnancy and the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Summary: Doctors in China analyzed data from nearly 43,000 pregnant women to see if slightly high blood sugar early in pregnancy (before 20 weeks) predicted future problems. They found that even without a prior diabetes diagnosis, women with elevated early blood sugar were nearly four times more likely to develop Gestational Diabetes later. Furthermore, these women faced significantly higher risks of high blood pressure, premature birth, and having dangerously large babies. The study suggests that early sugar screening is a vital warning system for preventing serious pregnancy complications.
