Utility of stool Xpert MTB/Rif assay in the diagnosis of pulmonary and abdominal tuberculosis in children - A study from Western India.

Summary: Diagnosing tuberculosis (TB) in children is tough because it is hard to get them to cough up mucus or do stomach washes. Doctors in India tested a simpler, pain-free idea: testing children's poop (stool) for TB bacteria using a tool called the Xpert assay. They looked at 52 kids with TB. The stool test was much easier to do, but it missed more TB cases than the standard lung tests. However, for kids under 5 years old, the stool test worked just as well as the lung tests! The takeaway? Stool tests are a great extra tool to help find TB in little kids, but they shouldn't replace standard tests entirely.
