Validated methods of cough assessment: a systematic review of the literature.
Summary: Cough is one of the most common reasons people visit the doctor, yet measuring how bad a cough is—and whether a treatment is working—remains surprisingly difficult. In this systematic review, researchers analyzed 34 studies to identify the best tools for assessing coughs. They found that specialized "Quality of Life" questionnaires are currently the most reliable method for research, as they accurately reflect a patient's condition. High-tech digital cough monitors show promise but need more testing in real-world situations. Meanwhile, simple rating scales (like asking a patient to rate their cough from 1 to 10) were found to be inconsistent and lacked scientific validation.
