Venous thromboembolism after laparoscopic bariatric surgery for morbid obesity: clinical burden and prevention.

Summary: Weight-loss surgery using laparoscopic techniques is a life-changing procedure, but like all surgeries, it carries a risk of blood clots. To prevent this, doctors administer blood thinners like heparin. A comprehensive review of 19 studies investigated whether tailoring the drug dose to the patient's weight offered better protection than standard doses. The results were surprising: standard doses kept the risk of dangerous lung clots very low (about 0.5%). Increasing the dose based on weight did not reduce the clot risk further but significantly increased the risk of major bleeding. The findings suggest that "more is not better"—standard preventative care offers the safest balance for patients.
