What Are Liver Spots?
Summary: Liver spots, also known as age spots, are small, flat, dark areas on your skin. They are caused by years of being in the sun or using tanning beds. Your skin makes extra pigment called melanin to protect itself from UV light, which creates these spots. They usually show up on your face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
Even though they are called "liver spots," they have absolutely nothing to do with your liver! They are completely harmless. However, if you don't like how they look, a doctor can help fade them using special creams or lasers. The best way to prevent them is by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing. Always check with a doctor if a dark spot changes color, grows, or has uneven borders, just to be safe.
