What CE Requirements Exist for Nurses?
Summary: Just like doctors, nurses need to keep learning even after they finish school. This is called Continuing Education (CE). Because medicine is always changing with new treatments and research, nurses must stay up to date so they can take the best care of their patients.
By November 2025, 42 states, Washington D.C., and Guam will require nurses to take CE courses every two to three years to renew their licenses. You can take these classes online through videos and question banks, or in person at conferences. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the top group that approves these courses. Costs can range from free to a few hundred dollars, but sometimes your employer will help pay for it, or it might even be tax-deductible! If you are a newly licensed nurse, you might even be lucky enough to be exempt for your first renewal.
