Why the World Must Contain Evil

Summary: Have you ever wondered why bad things happen if God is supposed to be good? In the 1700s, a philosopher named Gottfried Leibniz tried to answer this huge question. In his famous book, Theodicy, Leibniz acted like "God's lawyer." He argued that God didn't actually create evil. Instead, evil is just a lack of good.

Leibniz believed we live in the "best of all possible worlds." To him, things that seem bad actually help make the big picture better, much like dark shadows make the bright colors in a painting stand out. He said our true purpose in life is to work on improving ourselves and to help make the world even better.
