Wife of US Army sergeant detained in El Paso immigration facility
Summary: Jose Serrano is a U.S. Army sergeant who served three tours in Afghanistan. On April 14, he and his wife, Deisy, went to an immigration office to help her get permanent residency. Instead, ICE agents suddenly arrested her.
Deisy is originally from El Salvador, but she might be deported to Mexico. She had a valid work permit, but the government says she entered the U.S. illegally in 2016 and had a removal order from 2019. In the past, being married to a military service member helped protect immigrants from being deported. However, a recent policy change means that a family member's military service is no longer enough to stop immigration enforcement.
