Women Show Stronger Tau Response to Aβ in Preclinical Alzheimer Disease

Summary: Alzheimer's disease affects women more often than men, and a new study helps explain why this happens before any memory loss even starts. In the brain, there are two main things linked to Alzheimer's: amyloid plaques and tau tangles. The study found that even when men and women have the exact same amount of amyloid plaques, women's brains react differently.

Women build up much more of a protein called p-tau217. This extra tau buildup leads to faster memory problems and cognitive decline for women. Doctors looked at over 1,200 older adults and found this difference happens early on. This means that in the future, doctors might need to test and treat women differently to protect their brains.
