Your sense of smell fluctuates throughout the day.
Summary: Did you know your sense of smell changes throughout the day? It’s true! Scientists at Brown University found that our noses are strongest in the evening, right around 9 p.m. This happens because of our body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. When the sleep hormone melatonin goes up, our sense of smell kicks into high gear. Scientists think this might be our body’s way of checking for danger or finding one last snack before bed.
By the time 3 a.m. rolls around, our sense of smell is at its weakest. Our noses also change as we get older. Smell peaks around age 8 and stays strong until about age 50, when it starts to fade. But don't feel bad for your nose! Humans are actually better than dogs at smelling certain things that helped our ancestors survive, like ripe bananas and the scent of fresh rain on dirt.
